Merkel made a little girl cry after telling her that she and her parents may not be granted asylum and could be forced to return to Lebanon. …Blackstone’s earnings slipped in the second quarter. The private equity firm reported a 74% profit drop, but still had its third-highest quarterly dividend. …McDonald’s franchise owners aren’t happy with the company, saying that the business is in decline.
Four Marines were killed in Tennessee. An unidentified shooter opened fire at a military recruiting center and a Navy Reserve center in Chattanooga Thursday morning. The shooter is also dead, and an officer remains in the hospital in an undetermined condition. No other information has been released. CNN
George H.W. Bush breaks bone in neck. The 91-year-old former president George H.W. Bush broke a bone in his neck after a fall at his family home in Maine Wednesday. Bush will likely have to wear a neck brace, but is said to be in fine condition. The Guardian
Game of Thrones sweeps Emmy nominations. The HBO series Game of Thrones was nominated for 24 Emmys over a number of categories, the most of any show this year. Andy Samberg will host the awards September 20. Variety
Caitlyn Jenner faces varied responses to Arthur Ashe award. Jenner was met with plenty of applause and support after her acceptance speech of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at Wednesday night’s ESPYs. Jenner’s award and speech about trans acceptance was also hit with a large amount of backlash as some took to social media to criticize Jenner and the ESPYs, saying more worthy candidates were passed over for ratings. Get your happy hour drinks in Chicago! Illinois passed a law Thursday legalizing happy hours in the state. The Midwest state banned happy hour in 1989, fearing the drink deals led to post-work drunk driving. Bars were still allowed to have day long deals, such as half-price wine on Tuesdays. The U.S. still has 11 states with happy hour bans. Washington Post
Aladdin is coming live to a theater near you. Disney announced that Aladdin will be one of the next live-action films the company is reproducing. “Alice in Wonderland,” “Maleficent,” and “Cinderella” all proved popular with movie goers pushing Disney to turn to live-action remakes instead of cartoon sequels. The “Jungle Book,” “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” “Pete’s Dragon,” and “Beauty and the Beast” are all scheduled for live remakes in the next two years. MarketWatch
