The VIX, commonly known as the fear index, hasn’t even opened with a quote Monday morning. The U.S. stock markets are getting crushed, opening down nearly 5% before clawing their way back to off 3%. The rout began in China, which fell 8.5% overnight as fears that the government can’t control markets or the economy.

Last week, when the Dow lost more than 1,000 points and trading on the S&P 500 wiped out $1.1 trillion in value, the CBOE VIX Volatility index more than doubled.
