Chinese tech giant Tencent is apparently setting up a digital currency research team. Here’s The Block:
According to Chinese media reports, Tencent has issued an internal notice to employees, saying that it is looking for someone to head the digital currency research team. The team will be part of Tencent’s payments arm and focus on further developing the company’s payment business.
The team will help “advance the company’s payment strategy layout and ensure the long-term healthy development of payment business,” per the notice.
Tencent, which’ll be one of the first companies to receive China’s state-backed cryptocurrency, neither confirmed nor denied the research team to Chinese media. How the team will help advance Tencent’s payments business is also unclear. The company, however, is definitely no stranger to digital currencies, having published several whitepapers touching on them, at the very least.
