Only 17 short- biased hedge fund in the whole world? Really?

    HFR short sellers

Okay, everyone knows the famous maxim — lies, damn lies, and statistics.

And that’s pretty much what Value Walk has to say about a recent report from HFR that says that there are only 17 short-biased hedge funds in the entire hedge fund universe. As Seth Myers and Amy Poehler might say: Really?

Data from the secretive hedge fund industry is notoriously inconsistent from tracker to tracker — especially when you compare it to the reporting of mutual funds or other asset managers.

Hedge funds are enjoying a record number of assets under management; many might not officially tag themselves as short-biased but more than just 17 are deploying short strategies. Throw in mutual funds and ETFs that are imitating hedge fund strategies, and the pool of what’s short and what’s not gets really blurry. And certainly much bigger.

And for your weekend enjoyment, the original “Really?”
