U.S. stocks ended the week on a mixed note, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up, and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq slipping. The Dow boost was partially in thanks to the record high Nike stock prices. Customer sentiment was up this month, hitting 96.1 from 90.7 in May, and above the predicted 94.6. Maybe everyone was buying new sneakers? The Morningstar Investment Conference wrapped up in Chicago Friday after bringing together some of the biggest names in the finance world. Greece still is, well, doing something. The country continues to debate how to handle its debt as creditors slowly amp up the pressure.
Love wins. The U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage nation wide Friday. As people celebrated, President Obama called the decision a “big step in our march to equality.” Politico
Terrorists devastate three continents. A suicide bomber attacked a Shiite mosque in Kuwait City during Friday prayer, injuring at least eight people. Near Lyon, France, terrorists tried to blow up an American-owned industrial chemical plant and decapitated one person. In a resort town in Tunisia, at least 28 people were killed when gunmen opened fire. The attacks come days after ISIS called for violence during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. New York Times
Obama leads “Amazing Grace.” President Obama led thousands in singing “Amazing Grace” at Rev. Clementa Pinckney’s funeral Friday. Pinckney was one of those slain in South Carolina last week. During a eulogy, Obama called the Confederate flag a “reminder of systemic oppression and racial subjugation.” Reuters
Sepp Blatter hanging onto FIFA. The disgraced former FIFA president says that he has not resigned from the soccer organization, and hinted at a future run for the presidential seat again. Some people never learn. Wall Street Journal
NY prison search draws to close. Escaped convicted murder Richard Matt was shot and killed by police Friday after being on the lam for three weeks. David Sweat, who escaped with Matt, is currently being pursued by the police. CNN
You can’t take Lance out of the Tour. He’s back, although probably not better than ever. Lance Armstrong will be riding part of the Tour de France for charity, despite being stripped of his seven Tour titles for doping. BBC
Next Friday, July 3, the markets will be closed for Independence Day in the U.S. Jobless claims and the employment report will be out on Thursday, July 2 instead.
