The global markets have had their fair share of ups and downs this week. Good news is, the NYSE seems to be back to normal. Chinese stocks were up again Friday, mainly pushed by emergency government support. Greece laid out some fresh proposals for the eurozone leaders, keeping fingers crossed they reach a deal before they run out of money. …The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 1.2% Friday. The S&P 500 was up 1.2% as well, and the Nasdaq Composite Index was up 1.5%. …Janet Yellen says rates really should be higher this year, but the labor markets are still weak.
OPM chief ousted. Katherine Archuleta, chief of the federal Office of Personnel Management, is resigning in the wake of the federal data hack. Nearly 22 million people’s information was stolen from OPM computers. Archuleta and the White House noted that new leadership was necessary to respond to the data breaches. CBS
Ellen Pao forced out of Reddit. Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman will be taking over as CEO despite having no official role at the company for many years. Pao was hit with major backlash from Reddit users over her firing of Victoria Taylor, who staffed a popular feature. Pao says the Reddit user calls for her to be fired didn’t spur her resignation, her different views for firm growth did. Bloomberg
South Carolina shooter shouldn’t have had a gun. An error in the background check system allowed the Charleston, South Carolina shooter to purchase a gun, the FBI admitted Friday. The faulty data entry allowed Dylann Roof to buy the gun he used to murder nine people last month. The Atlantic
Girl power! The U.S. women’s World Cup champions were greeted by cheering crowds in New York Friday morning. The women had the privilege of being the first female athletes to be honored with a traditional ticker tape parade in the Big Apple. The team defeated Japan 5-2 in the World Cup final last Sunday. Little yellow creatures are taking over theaters. “Despicable Me”‘s minions have become the hottest movie this week with their own feature film, “Minions.” The two-feet-tall yellow pill-looking things are very popular with kids, and apparently some adults.
