Stocks were back up Monday as Greece accepted bailout aid from Europe. The Dow Jones Industrial Average grew 1.2%, the S&P 500 was up 1.1%, and the Nasdaq rose 1.5%. …While things seem relatively settled in Greece, many are pessimistic about the outcomes and longevity of the European bailout deal. The possibility of a Grexit isn’t totally behind us. …U.S. officials decided there was “no single cause” to the October 15, 2014 volatility that it the U.S. Treasury market. …Stock up on eclairs. Tuesday is Bastille Day for the French.
Hillary Clinton comes down on Wall Street. Clinton outlined her plan for the economy Monday, including proposals for tighter controls on Wall Street. “Too big too fail is still too big a problem,” she said. Clinton called out the “shadow banking system” as risky and needing more oversight. Bloomberg
Did Hillary take economics 101? That’s what conservative columnist James Taranto is asking. In her speech the democratic candidate for president said the middle class is working harder than ever — productivity numbers are up 240.4% between 1948 and 2014 but hourly compensation grew by only 108.3%. It’s an apples and oranges comparison: Labor productivity is not a measure of hard work. “It is closer to — though not precisely — the opposite.” And that pay gain? Massachusetts man arrested for terrorism plot. Alexander Ciccolo, a 23-year-old also known as Ali Al Amriki, was arrested for plotting an ISIS-inspired attack on a university, including purchasing guns and a pressure cooker to make a bomb. Ciccolo’s father, a Boston Police Captain, told investigators of his son’s intentions. Ciccolo reportedly has a long history of mental illness. Boston Globe
Hunt is on for drug lord escapee. Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, Mexico’s most notorious drug lord, escaped from a maximum security prison. Guzman crawled through a hole in a prison shower and into a mile-long tunnel. Some think the tunnel was merely a diversion, and Guzman actually just walked out of the prison with support from staff. Guzman previously escaped from prison in 2001 by hiding in a laundry cart. He was caught 13 years later sleeping at a beach resort. CNN
President Obama commutes sentences for 46. Obama has now commuted the sentences of 89 convicted criminals during his time in office. This latest round of 46 commutations were for nonviolent drug offenders, who Obama said had punishments that didn’t fit the crime. Obama wrote a letter to each of the people, telling them to make the most of this opportunity. CBS
Mass stingray deaths in Chicago zoo. All 54 stingrays in a Brookfield Zoo exhibit died. The Chicago zoo is currently investigating the habitat to determine why the oxygen levels dropped to fatal levels Friday. The zoo also lost 19 stingrays in 2008 when a malfunctioning heater rose habitat water temperatures by 10 degrees. Chicago Tribune
“Suicide Squad” trailer is out. Jared Leto’s creepy take on the Joker can now be seen online in the trailer for “Suicide Squad” due out next summer. If the three minute clip says anything about the full length film, we’re in for one eerie hit next August. Wall Street Journal
