Google is Building a New $1B Campus in New York City

Days after Apple announced that it is building a $1 billion new campus in Austin, Texas as part of a major expansion of its U.S. operations, Google has announced that it is building a $1 billion new campus in New York City called Google Hudson Square that will be home to its Global Business Organization.

Google already has about 7,000 employees in New York City at its offices in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. The company says that it can more than double the number of employees in New York over the next decade.

The new campus will consist of two buildings built on over 1.7 million square-feet of land at 315 and 345 Hudson Street, while the company also has a signed letter of intent at 550 Washington Street. Google announced earlier this year that it had purchased Chelsea Market in Manhattan for $2.4 billion and is leasing additional space at Pier 57.

“When we came to New York City almost two decades ago, it was our first office outside of California,” Ruth Porat, SVP and CFO of Google and Alphabet, said in a statement. “It’s now home to more than 7,000 employees, speaking 50 languages, working on a broad range of teams including Search, Ads, Maps, YouTube, Cloud, Technical Infrastructure, Sales, Partnerships and Research.”

“New York City continues to be a great source of diverse, world-class talent—that’s what brought Google to the city in 2000 and that’s what keeps us here,” she said.
