Hedge fund conference trades Dom Perignon sur la mer for cannabis on the canals

They say you can never be too rich or too thin. But, apparently, the 1% acknowledges that you can be too-over-the-top.

That could account for why GAIM is abandoning  Monaco for its annual hedge fund conference, one of the biggest in the world, reports the Wall Street Journal. Call this a victory for Occupy Wall Street. The annual confab, which met this week, was host to just 400 attendees — well below the the pre-crisis peak of  1,000.

So GAIM is swapping its short walk to the Mediterranean for canals, hosting next year’s conference in Amsterdam. It’s farther from gaudy wealth, but maybe not a much further cry from hedge fund stereotypes.

    Red light district anyone?
