London Calling: A New Survey Shows 1 in 3 Londoners Plan on Investing in Cryptocurrencies

Roughly 1 in 3 (or 30 percent) of people in London have said they plan on investing in cryptocurrencies – c0mpared to 13 percent nationwide in the United Kingdom, according to a new survey conducted by Rathbone Investment Management.

The survey also found that 1 in 8 crypto investors in London “attribute their current wealth to digital currencies like bitcoin and ethereum compared to just four per cent in other parts of the UK,” according to a City A.M. report about the survey.

Rathbone investment director Robert Hughes-Penney said: “Lucrative returns made by the early adopters of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have been widely publicised. These early investors have been followed by others looking to make similar gains.

“These figures suggest there are a number of investors in London with shorter investment goals who have been more susceptible to the so-called bitcoin craze, while outside of the capital investors have mostly stayed clear of what is a high-risk asset class.”

Not surprisingly, the interest in crypto investing is being led by younger people: The survey found that 37 percent people under the age of 35 would consider investing in digital coins in the future, compared to only 4 percent of people 45 years and older. The survey of 1,503 UK adults was conducted by Atomik on behalf of Rathbone.

As CCN reported, a separate survey released in June found that a quarter of UK millennials said they prefer investing in Bitcoin over real estate, “viewing the digital asset as a more promising opportunity than purchasing physical property, with a clear preference for Bitcoin over stocks, government bonds, and gold.”
